October – Charity Spotlight

Mercator Financial Inc. – Our Community

October 2018 Mercator Financial Inc’s Charity Spotlight is on Southwest Crisis Services.  We are honoured to showcase this non-profit organization that does so much in our community.

The mandate of Southwest Crisis Services is to take action to prevent and alleviate violence and abuse by empowering people to be confident, knowledgeable about healthy relationships, and have the capacity to thrive. The vision is healthy individuals within safe, peaceful communities.

Southwest Crisis Services is a regional, charitable organization offering:

  • A Safe Shelter for women and their children at risk of or experiencing abuse,
  • 24/7 Crisis Help Line response,
  • Community Outreach Programming including individual and couple supportive counselling, group empowerment programs, and prevention education workshops and events.
The Safe Shelter is a safe, secure, confidential and welcoming home where women and their children can live for up to 4 weeks. In addition to shelter and meeting basic needs, staff are available 24 hours and offer emotional support, information, referrals and advocacy. The Safe Shelter provides women fleeing violence with the critical support services that will help them make their transition to life free of abuse. Each year, Southwest Crisis Services gives shelter, safety, support and hope to more than 100 women and children experiencing abuse.

Through Southwest Crisis Services’ Outreach Program, over 90 people of all ages and genders each month access one-on-one and couple supportive counselling and participate in group empowerment programs. These services support people to overcome trauma, transform their relationships and lead a life free of abuse.

Each month, Southwest Crisis Services’ staff respond to over 150 Crisis Help Line calls, providing a listening ear, guidance, and encouragement and make over 200 referrals.

If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse there is someone you can reach out to anytime of day or night. Staff are there to listen, to offer you emotional support, guidance, information and referrals, to advocate for you, to ensure your basic needs are met, and to support and encourage you as you heal and transition to a life free of abuse
