September – Charity Spotlight

Mercator Financial Inc. – Our Community

September 2017 Mercator Financial Inc. Charity Spotlight is on Swift Current SPCA.

About:

The Swift Current SPCA opened in 1973 with a mandate to operate as a no-kill shelter (no animals are euthanized to free up space.)

The shelter serves all of southwest Saskatchewan and works with around 300 pets each year. The SPCA is a registered non-profit charity and is run by a volunteer board of directors.

Each year around 80% of the shelter’s operating budget must come from public donations and fundraising as the organization is not funded by any provincial or federal bodies of government.

All funds raised are used locally to support the no euthanize mandate.

Programs and Services:

Shelter and care
for abandoned, stray and surrendered dogs and cats. The animals receive food, medical services if required, clean, warm, safe shelter, animal socialization and lots of TLC!

Reunite strays with their owners through the Lost and Found Registry and micro-chipping.

Adoptions & Foster Families –  the SPCA works to help shelter animals find new forever homes through “test drives” and full adoptions. SPCA also enlists foster families to take pets in for a period of time to help socialize them to family life.

Spay/Neuter Program –  over 200 dogs and cats are spayed or neutered each year, helping reduce the population of unwanted animals.

Events and Annual Appeal:

The SPCA runs numerous awareness and fundraising events each year. Kind community members also run fundraisers for the shelter. A few of the regular events are outlined below:

National Cupcake Day: Businesses are encouraged to have staff make and sell cupcakes with proceeds to SPCA – held in February.

Annual SPCA Calendar: (Starring your pet!)

“Fill the Pets” promotion: Held with the Swift Current Broncos.

Radiothon Fundraiser: Held in May.

SPCA Used Bookstore: the bookstore located at 37 – 1st Avenue NE, takes donated books, puzzles, games and DVD’s for resale. You will also find the “mobile” book selection at many trade shows, market square and community events.

Pets in the Park: A dog walk fundraiser, held in August.
